    Forming faith rituals: Every day

    2018-01-19T00:00:00Z

For faith at home to work for me, it has to be part of my everyday life. We have special things we do at certain points each week and each year, but the reality of our faith really starts to change our lives when it’s part of what we do each day.

Forming faith rituals: Even the very youngest

    2017-12-13T00:00:00Z

I never wanted to work with the under-5s. I preferred children who were toilet-trained, and could walk and talk. As a person who loves reading and writing, I found it hard to relate to these tiny bundles of mess who didn’t seem to have a handle on the basics of life.

Forming faith rituals: New year with God

    2017-11-22T00:00:00Z

New year isn’t necessarily a family event designed with younger children in mind. My youngest, currently four, has put in a request to stay up late this new year and watch the Bee Gees, which is what she considers to be ‘new year’. (Just to clarify, last year we watched a documentary about the Bee Gees with my other daughter as she loved the music, and it was safer than most stuff that was broadcast late on New Year’s Eve!)

    A story for home: Easter

    2017-10-20T00:00:00Z

Here is a story for you to tell at home, perhaps at bedtime or as part of a God-time during your day. You can break this story up and tell it verse by verse, or tell it all at once. You might want to tell it every so often over the next few months up to Easter-time, so that your children grow familiar with the Easter story. You could also use this in a children’s session.

    Forming faith rituals: Christmas

    2017-10-20T00:00:00Z

Christmas is a great time to celebrate Jesus. However, it is also a very busy time, so how do we make sure we find the space to celebrate Jesus together as a family? I think we need to be intentional, get prepared in advance and keep it simple.

Forming faith rituals: Mini rituals adapted from Jewish ‘High Holy Days’

    2017-09-25T00:00:00Z

In our family, we celebrate Shabbat each week and Passover every year. So, I wanted to look at the Jewish ‘High Holy Days’, as they are known, to find some rituals we could use to enrich our faith at home. I’m not going to give an exhaustive overview here because you have Google too, but focus on what elements we can adapt and use.

Parenting in a world of screens

    2017-08-25T00:00:00Z

My alarm went off at 6.30am as usual, heralding a new day. I fumbled for the phone so I could swipe the screen; the slumber function would give me a welcome ten more minutes in bed before the day began. As well as waking me in the morning, my smartphone will be my trusted companion throughout the day.
