Summer road trips don’t have to mean everyone plugged into their own headphones. Michael J Tinker suggests two brilliant podcasts that spark laughter, conversation, and deeper faith while you travel together

Summer holidays are here again. But what to do on those long drives?

Of course, everyone could plug into their own device, listening to whatever they choose… however, this could be missing out on a wonderful opportunity to enjoy something together, to provoke conversation and thought, to turn those long drives into significant memories and times of growth.

One great option is to listen to music – for that, check out another article of mine on summer playlists.

But I want to suggest two different podcasts that you and your whole family may enjoy. There are many other podcasts out there, so please share your suggestions below!

1. Faith In Families

The crew at Faith in Kids have been putting out podcasts for a number of years now, and I’ve had the joy of being on a few. Alongside their ‘Faith in Parents’ podcast which has great interviews and advice for parents, ‘Faith in Families’ does what it says and is designed to be listened to together. Ed and Jam present a packed show with an overarching Bible story or theme, during which you will hear sketches, Bible readings, jokes, fun facts and questions where you can pause the show and have a chat.

This is a brilliant way to dive into some great Bible truths as a whole family. What better way to pass the time?

2. Tinker-Time: Juniper Adventures

The crew of the JBI Starship Juniper head off on various misadventures in this family podcast. And full disclosure, I am part of that hapless crew. In series 1 we head to the planet Dendros to find out why they’ve cut off communications with the Founder, only to discover that a nefarious character known simply as ‘Nick’ has taken control, fooling the people into thinking they don’t need the Founder (you can see where this is going…)

Written by James Cary (who writes comeday for the BBC) and packed full of laughter, crashed spacecraft, the Swamp of Forgetfulness, too much broccoli and Mr Grumpy’s usual moaning, this is another way to spark conversation about important questions like ‘why God cares about us being in relationship with him?’, ‘what if I make a terrible decision?’ and ‘does God really care if I can’t see Him?’

Season 2 has kicked off and is the ‘radio-version’ of the TV series which is available on YouTube. Expect more gags, grumpiness, confusion (mostly Captain Archibald) and lessons about how the gospel of Jesus shapes our lives.
