16-17 year olds will be obliged to attend school for the first time this year. Young people who were in Year 11 last academic year are required to stay in compulsory education for one more year. Those who were in Year ten or below last year will be required to stay until they are 18.

Under-11s treated for depression
Thousands of children under the age of eleven have received treatment for depression, stress and anxiety over the last five years. A freedom of information request from the Daily Mirror revealed that, in just two of England’s 60 mental health trusts, 4,391 children aged 10 or younger have received mental health treatment in the last five years.

Two reports published by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner have warned that the level of sexual violence in neighbourhoods dominated by gangs and gang culture is comparable to that of a warzone. Professor Jenny Pearce, author of one of the reports entitled It’s wrong… but you get used to it, said: ‘In some areas the level of sexual violence and the types of violence inflicted are comparable to how sexual violence is used in war-torn territories.’
