Rugby Sevens

Many towns in Britain are either rugby or football towns. If you’re a Wasps fan or from Widnes, you’re quids in. Otherwise, mumble darkly about the wrong shaped ball and turn over to the synchronised swimming.

Kite Surfing

Whatever you do, do not go out on your local lake with a kite made from a carrier bag. Just don’t.

Golf

We’ve all played crazy golf – how much different can Olympic-level play be? Lace your conversation with ‘driving wedge’ this and ‘albatross’ that and you’ll sound the consummate professional.

Sporting events such as the Olympics or football’s European Championship provide great opportunities to gather children and families together and hold community events at your church. Show some of the big football games, featuring one of the home nations (sorry Scotland) or check out which Olympic events are at the best time for you.

You could hold some training run by a local badminton club or rugby team so that everyone gets a try at an Olympic sport. You could even hire out the local swimming pool! Food also plays a big part around sport, and also around making people feel welcome, so provide snacks, do a barbeque or ask a local restaurant to cater for you.

There are so many events on this summer – why not use them to welcome local children and families to your church?
