SPIT BUCKET

Please don’t get the bucket and jug mixed up at the end of this game. Please. PLEASE.

Split your group into teams and place a chair with an empty bucket by each team. At the other end of your playing area set up a jug of water and some cups. One person at a time has to go to the table, fill their mouth with water, run back, and spit it into the bucket. Only once the person has spat out their water can the next person go. The winning team is the one with the most gross spit water in their bucket after an allotted period of time.

IZZY WIZZY, LET’S GET FIZZY

This game is almost identical to the final round of Takeshi’s Castle, but without the preceding health and safety nightmares or Craig Charles voiceover.

Give each person an Alka-Seltzer tablet (or anything effervescent), attached on a piece of string which they should wear around their neck. In essence, this is a water fight. If you’ve got enough (powerful) water pistols you can get everyone to play at once – everyone trying to dissolve everyone else’s tablet while avoiding the liquid fire of their opponents (they’re not allowed to cover or hide their own fizzy pill). Once their tablet has dissolved, they’re out. If you haven’t got enough for everyone, you could do a knockout, one-on-one competition with winners progressing to the next round.

HOT BAL-POTATO-LOON

I got potatoes and water balloons mixed up once. My chips were soggy and my water fight was painful.

This game is a variation on ‘hot potato’ but with added water balloons. Get the group in a circle, with small gaps between each person. Pass (throw) a water balloon around the circle. Once it pops on someone they are out but don’t let the circle close up – leave the gaps to make the game harder. You could have more than one balloon going round at a time.

SHOES OFF, WATER UP

Imagine a game which exactly replicates the feeling of being on the beach but without the sand. Or the sun. Or the sea.

Get the group into teams of four or fewer, making sure they’re all wearing shoes. Tell them to lie down, with feet in the air, then place a nearly full bucket of water on their collective feet, helping them to get it balanced. Each person then has to try and take their shoes off while the team keeps the bucket upright and themselves dry. If they’re all wearing flip-flops, or easy to remove footwear, you could have some cheap socks on standby as a harder alternative.

ICE-TEE

Not a rapper, not frozen golf, not a cold-hot drink, but an actual game.

Get enough trays so you have one for every four people. Take a t-shirt and put in on the tray, cover it in water and freeze it. Then give each team a frozen tray and the winning team is the one that frees the t-shirt and has one member wearing it. Give them gloves and salt to help the process.
