    A year without sport

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

The 1st of January was one of the greatest days of my life. I’ve never been a massive fan of New Year – in fact most years I am to Hogmanay what Scrooge is to Christmas – I go to bed early and try to sleep through the gunpowder explosions going off outside my bedroom window. 2016 was different because, for me, 2015 was different. 2015 was a year without sport.

    YOUTH SURVEY RESULTS

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Last summer, in our one-off youth focused edition, we included a survey to be completed by young people - about faith, youth group and church. The survey covers predominantly Christian young people, as to hear about the survey they would have needed to be in contact with a Christian youth worker in some form. Here are the headline findings from the 293 young people surveyed.

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

The following statistics are an amalgamation of two separate surveys of youth workers. The first was carried out among youth workers at Soul Survivor, and the second by Cafe Leadership's Andy Burns. Here are the significant findings.

    Resident-Hell: More Stories

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Over the years, we’ve seen some amazing examples of how God has redeemed even the worst youth trips away – we documented some of these stories in March’s Resident-Hell article and here’s another example of a positive outcome that a youth worker recently sent in:

Do we realise who we are?

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Martin Saunders started this year on the blog calling for a radical shift in youth work, and this was followed by Ali Campbell who called from a radical shift in how we view discipleship, challenging us to adopt a discipleship of imitation, giving our young people something to imitate. But, Andy Wilson asks, what is it we are giving young people to imitate?

    Prayer in Schools

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

You might have memories of praying at primary school when you were a child: hands together, eyes closed…a short, non-committal prayer by a teacher followed by a drawn-out ‘Aaaaaaaaaamen’ from the whole school. This may still be the case in your local school. Religious education is struggling from a lack of specialist teachers, and a 2010 Ofsted report comments that, while the subject was making positive contributions to areas such as community cohesion, it was contributing little to students’ spiritual development.

    The Profile Picture

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Occasionally, due to bank holidays, deputy editor Phoebe Thompson ends up in the office by herself, going slightly mad. This happened recently and fortunately the fruits of her labour were this rather excellent blog.

    The third person

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Seeing things from an outside perspective can be a real benefit to achieving progress, insight, and hopefully change. When you are in the thick of things yourself it can be really hard to see the obvious mistakes you are making or understand anyone else’s point of view.

In this week's Youthwork blog, Andy Frost of Share Jesus International proposes the idea of re-instating a 'rites of passage' for young people, and the impact this would have in today's society.

    The old-fashioned revolution

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

By now, faithful blog readers, you'll be more than familiar with Martin Saunders' call for a youth ministry revolution, and what that might look like. But why do we even care about and want a revolution? Mark Walley wonders if we we're all missing something

    The time is now

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Things take time. It's been five years since, as then-fairly-new editor of Youthwork magazine, I first expressed a desire to try to publish a magazine for Christian children's leaders, but the timing wasn't quite right. Travelling around, I'd heard many people express a frustration that our magazine was only focussed on teenagers, without really catering for the huge number of Christians who invest in the many under-11s in our churches and communities.

    Returning to Narnia

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

I haven't blogged since Youthwork the Conference back in November, and I put that down to SO much happening. As you're reading this you may (if you're a Youthwork magazine subscriber) be looking at the result of months of hard work from the editorial team and our designers. Twin that with a new website and I think I've pretty much excused myself!
