Well this wasn’t exactly unforeseen was it?
While these higher fees may put off some students, it is definitely worth noting that the ability for someone to access and start higher education has not changed. Students can get a FULL LOAN for their fees if they need it, and do not have to pay a penny of it back until they are earning enough to pay it back. None-the-less, we shouldn’t be forcing University and qualifications on young people, because with graduate unemployment rising (a whopping 20% now don’t have a job) we should be considering other options. There are so many opportunities for young people to take a year out of education - they don’t have to cost thousands of pounds and could provide you with some valuable skills and dramatically open up your job opportunities if you do things properly!
The March issue of Youthwork will have an extended feature on Gap Years, and we’ll also be looking at an innovative new way that the church can get involved in the lives of students…
