“Justin was ten when I first met him. I went up to Stratford Ontario and performed a show in a coffee shop there. It was packed out, and this weird looking guy came up to me. He was like the evil looking dude on Zoolander, you know Will Ferrell? With the hair coming out both sides of his head. One time he was walking down the street eating a beetroot, with red juice dripping down his face. Really weird. And this guy said to me: ‘Hey man, do you wanna come to this meeting?’ I said – ‘Yeah sure’ – because I knew that anywhere this guy went was going to be an adventure.

"So I went to a prayer meeting with this guy and there was a young kid there who sang a song. That was Justin Bieber. He was just a kid from a low income housing project in the area. So every time we went to the Stratford Ontario we would pick Justin up from home and he would sing for us. And then he started to open for me – his first show was opening for me and my guitarist. He opened for us a few times. When he started to put up videos, and was getting millions of hits – his mum asked us for advice. And we didn’t know, we hadn’t been that famous! We tried to encourage her as much as we could. Then the manager he signed with introduced him to Usher, and it took off.

"It’s kind of funny when you see, you know, The Voice and Usher says: ‘I discovered Justin Bieber’. I just think no, it was Nathan. This weird guy with the crazy hair. Because Justin didn’t have a dad. And this guy Nathan would invite him round to his house, and let Justin play percussion. They would play music together. He may look funny, but Nathan was the life of God, the love of Jesus to him. Nathan discovered Justin Bieber.”
