The character of Scrooge is a fascinating one, with much potential for exploration as he develops over the film. From his early por­trayal as a selfish, miserly, work-obsessed man who pays no attention to others’ emo­tions, to the man who is desperate to make amends and connect with everyone at the end, it’s a terrific journey to explore. It’s quite nice to draw a comparison between Scrooge and Cratchit to see what they value during Christmas and what is important to them in life – so if you have time, watch the whole film to make this clearer to your group.

If you’re pressed for time, this clip sees Scrooge going along his journey with the Ghost of Christmas Present. Visiting the out­side world and experiencing why different people appreciate the season, He begins to see what he’s been missing out on. Scrooge is then taken to his nephew’s house, where he discovers just what his family feels about him. Scrooge is forced to question the man that he has become and if he is happy with that.

Once you’ve watched the clip discuss the following questions:

If you were given the option to listen to other people talk about you, would you accept? Why?

How do you think Scrooge is feeling in this clip?      

Have we lost the true value of Christmas? What can we do to get it back?

Once you’ve had your first set of discussions, return to a larger group and read Matthew 24:14-30. It’s not the most Christmassy of passages, but there is a nice link to the character of Scrooge and the theme of giving at Christmas time. Once you’ve read the passage, discuss the following questions:

What is the meaning behind this parable and how might it link to Christmas time?

Is the master too harsh to the final servant in the story? Why?

How can we be generous in all aspects of our lives this Christmas?

Should the servant be allowed a second chance like Scrooge? What does the char­acter of the master suggest about God? 

As it’s the Christmas season, why not settle down to watch the whole of The Muppet Christmas Carol, it’s a guaranteed hit that will work with everyone regardless of age and temperament. And may God bless us - everyone.
