The clip starts at 31:52 minutes and lasts until 37:34 minutes, or an extended version can last until 50:22 minutes.

Katniss has been rescued from the 75th Hunger Games by the 13th District uprising and is now in hiding, while Peeta has been captured by the Capitol and is being held hostage. What happens next is a media war as both sides release footage supporting their campaigns. Alongside this the Capitol steps up its aggression and suppression of the districts with devastating effect. Katniss is forced to face her toughest demons and become the ‘Mockingjay’ to lead the District revolution.

In this clip we see Katniss being coached and developed into her new role as symbol of the revolution. We also see the power of TV and the media as she is given a chance to give statements to the districts and galvanise them to action. At first reluctant and wooden in her delivery, Katniss’s support team meets to attempt to create the ‘Mockingjay’ figure they believe the uprising needs. The group realises that creating one person for others to believe in, aspire to and to be led by could be the turning point in their revolution. In the extended clip, we see Katniss visit one of the districts and narrowly survive a Capitol attack; impassioned, Katniss turns to the camera and finally delivers the Mockingjay speech that the uprising has needed. After showing the clip, break into small discussion groups and discuss the following questions:

• Have you ever been influenced by anything that you’ve seen on television, be it an advert or programme?

• How do you think the media presents the idea of being a Christian today?

• Do you think that Katniss and her audience are being manipulated in this clip?

• If you were running a Christian programme on TV, what would you include and look to present?

After discussing the first set of questions, read through James chapter three together (it would be helpful to the discussions to give some context to the passage and book) and return to your groups to discuss the next set of questions:

• What do you think the overall message of the passage is?

• What positives does the chapter list about how we can use our speech and language?

• How do you think that Katniss and the uprising would respond to the message of this passage?

• Do we have a problem with our untamed tongues? What sort of issues might that lead us into and how could we improve them?
